2011 French Open Tennis Betting – Men’s Third Round
We’re into the third round of the men’s draw of the 2011 French Open. We’re still looking for good matches to bet on, and for the third round we’re going to have to look at matches other than the ones listed below.
Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer are all such huge favourites that it makes it tough to get our money down. We take our tennis betting seriously, so it’s all about value for us. However, we realize that these are the most popular players to bet on, so we have some information below to help you make smart bets.
Although a few lower seeded players were knocked out in the second round, there were no major upsets. So far, the only big story has been the struggles of Rafael Nadal.
Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal had a closer than expected match against John Isner in the first round, a match that went 5 sets with two tiebreakers. Nadal lost both tiebreakers and Isner had a 2-1 set advantage heading into the fourth set. Of course Nadal was able to squeek out the win, but not without question to his #1 seeding.
In the second round, Nadal had another tough match, this time against unseeded, fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar. While Nadal won it in straight sets, the match was closer than the numbers imply. The third set went to a tiebreaker, with Nadal winning it 7-4. Journeyman Andujar gave Nadal more than anyone expected, once again raising questions about Nadal.
In the third round, Nadal will be facing Croatian Antonio Veic. Veic is a 23 year old, right handed player who has never ranked higher than 157 in the world. He is currently ranked #227 in the ATP rankings.

While we expect these odds to go down, Nadal is currently a 1/100 favorite at Bodog.com, and 1/200 at Bet365.com. Obviously these are terrible odds not worth betting on, and we don’t see them coming down enough to make a bet on Nadal worthwhile. We can get 20/1 at Bet365 on Veic right now as well, but I won’t be taking that bet either. At their current odds, this isn’t a match I would recommend betting on.

Novak Djokovic
By far the hottest player in the world right now, Novak Djokovic won his first round match in easy, straight set fashion where he only lost 6 games the entire match. In the second round, he beat Victor Hanescu when Hanescu retired in the third set. Novak won the first two sets, and the men were on-serve in the third set when Navescu retired.
On Friday the 27th, Djokovic will have a tougher challenge in the third round, facing Juan Martin Del Potro. Del Potro’s best finish at Roland Garros was in 2009 when he made it to the semi-finals. Novak holds a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head matches, including a win on clay at the World Tour Masters in 2009.

Novak Djokovic is a 1/8 favorite at Bodog.eu or 1/9 at Bet365.com. Punters can get 9/2 on Del Potro at Bodog, or 5/1 at Bet365. While I greatly favor Djokovic in this match, I want to see the ods come down a bit before placing a bet on him. If I can get closer to 1/5 as match time approaches, I’ll be laying my money on him. I recommend you do the same.
Roger Federer
Roger Federer has made it into the third round by beating Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in straight sets in the first round, then Maxime Teixeira in even easier fashion. Teixeira only won 5 games the entire match.
In the third round match on Friday, Federer will be taking on the 29 seed Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia. Roger holds a 3-0 lifetime record against Tipsarevic, and comes into this match a big favorite.

Federer is a 1/16 favorite at the Bodog Sportsbook, and 1/20 at Bet365. Tipsarevic is listed at 7/1 at Bodog, and 8/1 at Bet365. This is another match like the two above, where the odds are too great to make a bet worthwhile. I expect Federer to win, but at 1/16, the risk is too high. I’ll be waiting for matchups later in the tournament where I can find better value. For now, hold onto your cash and just enjoy the tennis.
