Rangers vs Penguins NHL Game Preview
Sid (the Kid) Crosby is growing up and dominating the NHL like few others have since The Great One. His recent 18 game point streak, overall defensive play as well as 26 goals for the year make him a runaway MVP if the season ended today. Evgeni Makin and Jordan Staal, two of Crosby’s key players in the goal barrage have been sidelined with injuries but no matter, the Penguins keep rolling. Fifth in the NHL in scoring, second in goals against, Pittsburgh is solid on four lines and across the blueline. The play of netminder Marc-Andre Fluery has been solid with a save percentage of .913. Back-up Brent Johnson has been strong as well posting a 2.00 goals against mark.
The NHL season can be long and schedule makers unkind. Facing the Rangers 24 hours after a trip to meet the Flyers is brutal. A slow start in this one could doom the home team.
The Broadway Blueshirts make the trip across the Keystone State to renew rivalries. New York is led by Brandon Dubinsky (14 goals) and Brian Boyle (11 goals). The Rangers shocked Washington and everyone in the league with a 7-0 win over the Capitals when Ryan Callahan scored twice and Henrik Lundquist stopped all 31 shots. The Rangers goaltender has been Vezina worthy to date and sports a superb .919 save percentage. The Swedish national team goalie has five shutouts on the young season.
The question becomes whether the Penguins will get a frustrated as the Capitals did on Sunday and resort to fighting; not likely. Pittsburgh is far better coached and more disciplined as Crosby rarely loses his cool. New York will ride Lundquist as far as he can take them but look for the Penguins to find a way through and win by two. Expect this one to be fairly close checking and if the over is 5.5; look under as a safer bet.
