The first Grand Slam of the year, the 2011 Australian Open has lived up to its hype. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both lost in straight sets, leaving Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to battle for the title. Their match will be held at 3:30am EST on Sunday morning. On the women’s side, Kim Clijsters beat Na Li 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 for the women’s singles title.
We’re really interested to see what happens in the Djokovic vs Murray match. Novak Djokovic looks like a well-oiled machine right now, while Andy Murray has been very solid as well. Djokovic has never looked better, and his improved mental attitude on the court is paying off.

Men’s Finals Update & Prediction
Novak Djokovic looks incredibly good right now. His fitness is very high, he’s moving extremely well, and all of his shots are there. Most importantly, his serve is as good or better than ever.
Djokovic leads the head to head series 4-3, but Murray has won the last three matches they’ve played. That would mean more to me if the last time they met wasn’t close to two years ago. Djokovic is much improved since then, and ready to repeat his 2008 Australian Open title.
I have a feeling that Djokovic is going to win this easier than most expect. I think Murray will take one set, but that’s it. Novak Djokovic in 4 sets for the 2011 Australian Open title.

Women’s Finals Update & Prediction
Like everyone, I expect Clijsters to win this match. Na Li, the #9 seed, has had an impressive tournament, but I see it ending here. My only concern are the odds. I don’t care for -305 or -330 for Clijsters, as Na Li has already beaten Clijsters earlier in the year. Clijsters has a 4-2 lead in head to head matchups, but Li has won 2 of the last three.
At +250, the question is whether Clijsters is 2.5 times more likely to win this match. Clijsters has the experience in major finals, but Li plays her tough. Semifinals Update
Rafael Nadal lost in straight sets to David Ferrer as he struggled with an apparent leg injury. The men’s semifinals matches will be Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer, and David Ferrer vs Andy Murray.
Switzerland’s greatest tennis player and perhaps all-time best athlete, Federer is through to the semifinals where he’ll face Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. Djokovic is seeded third but owns a less than stellar 6-13 career record against Federer. He did defeat the Swiss star in the 2006 US Open semifinals; the last time the two met in a Grand Slam semi or later.
Federer will be seeking his 17th Grand Slam title and fifth Australian Open Championship. He earned his way to the semifinals with a straight set win over countrymen Stanislas Wawrinka, the 19th seed.
Quarterfinals
On the men’s side, tennis fans worldwide will be rooting for Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to renew their fabled rivalry on Centre Court in the Rod Laver Arena. Nadal won in 2009, while Federer captured the crown last year. These two have met 20 times with Nadal holding a 13-7 edge.
Getting to the dream final however has been much easier for the Spaniard Nadal. He hasn’t dropped a set or even been pushed to a tiebreaker. His fourth round straight-set triumph over Marin Cilic was wrapped up in less than two hours. He will face seventh seeded David Ferrer who defeated Milos Raonic of Canada. The winner will battle the victor of the Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. Andy Murray match. Dolgopolov from the Ukraine is the lone unseeded player left in the tournament. Murray is the fifth seed and the native of Great Britain is a sentimental favorite with the Aussie fans.
Federer vs. Nadal is the ideal men’s final and look for Nadal to win once again.

At the time of this writing, Rafael Nadal is the favorite to win the 2011 Australian Open. Here are the current futures odds at Bodog.com for the remaining men:

- David Ferrer: 10/1
If you’re wondering why Murray is 2/1 and Djokovic is 4/1, it’s because Murray is much more likely to make the finals than Djokovic. Djokovid is facing Federer in the semi’s, while Murray plays David Ferrer. Since Murray has a better shot to make the finals, he has a better chance to win the title. At this point, no doubt we’re taking Federer at 11/10.
2011 Australian Open – Women’s Draw
Semifinals Update
On the women’s side, the semifinal matchups are Caroline Wozniacki vs Na Li, and Kim Clijsters vs Vera Zvonareva.
The women’s draw started with a controversy as Caroline Wozniacki was seeded first, yet never having won a Grand Slam title. Kim Clijsters has won three US Open titles and is seeded third. But the organizers must have known something as three of the top four seeds made the semifinals.
The lone outsider is ninth seeded Na Li of China but this is her second consecutive Australian Open semifinal, having lost to Williams last year. She seems to play her best tennis down under and will face Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, who is making her debut in an Australian Open semifinal. Wozniacki fell in the fourth round in both 2008 and 2010, but the right-handed baseline specialist defeated Italy’s Francesca Schiavone in the quarterfinals to earn her place this year.
In the other semifinal, Kim Clijsters will meet second seeded Vera Zvonareva. Clijsters from Belgium, is a veteran of Grand Slam tennis with the three US Open titles on her resume. Clijsters has never won in the land of kangaroos, but she’s made a final and four semifinal appearances. If she gets through to the finals, the entire country of Australia will be on her side as a sentimental favorite. Since Clijsters used to date Aussie Lleyton Hewitt, the Australians have lovingly called her ‘Aussie Kim’.
Russian born, 26 year-old Zvonareva has no Grand Slam titles under her belt, but was runner-up in the most recent US Open and Wimbledon tournaments. She lost to Clijsters in last summer’s Open championship in the United States. She is a gritty player but has moments of inconsistency that often lead to her downfall. She may be the most improved player in tennis over the past 12 months.
A Clijsters vs. Wozniacki match-up would be the most interesting, however, Na Li is going to be a tough hurdle for the top-seeded Dane. Look for Clijsters to overcome all the odds and win her first Australian Open championship.

The latest odds had her at 23/20, Caroline Wozniacki at 3/1, Vera Zvonareva at 6/1, Na Li at 11/4, Petra Kvitova at 12/1, and Agnieszka Radwanska at 50/1. Radwanska was beaten by Clijsters 6-3, 7-6, and Zvonareva beat Kvitova 6-2, 6-4.
