Betting on NFL Week 1
For professional & serious NFL handicappers, it’s time to get to work. Preseason games are now underway, and starters get limited playing time. We need to start looking for new impact players that could give us an edge in week 1.
Week one can be a double-edged sword for bettors. While it can be easier to find value in week 1, teams are also less predictable than they are later in the season (of course these things go hand in hand). One of my favorite ways to get an edge is to take a closer look at defenses. Which teams found ‘that guy’ they needed, and which ones didn’t? Most casual bettors allow big-name free agent signings to control their early betting habits. What many of them don’t pay attention to are the teams who filled an important hole in their defense.
This is what I love about the early part of each season, finding those key, new players who will make an impact. The easiest and fastest way to get this information is to look at each teams weaknesses during the prior season. Once you narrow it down to key positions, look to see if the team has done anything to shore-up those areas. Of course that’s only a piece of the entire picture, because we also have to pay attention to key players lost in free agency or trades. However, when you find a team that has improved a weakness and remained relatively equal in stronger areas, you might have some some insight that other bettors aren’t counting on. One play can stop a touchdown or a field goal, and that one play can change the outcome of your bet.
Value can often be found on big favorites by betting early, before the masses start betting. As the betting volume increases on favorites, lines generally move in favor of the underdogs. While this isn’t always the case, it’s a good general rule to bet on favorites early, and wait until closer to game time to bet on dogs.
