Boston Celtics Betting Lines
As of today, January 17th, the Boston Celtics (30-9) hold a 1.5 game lead over the Miami Heat (30-12). The Chicago Bulls trail by just 3 games, and the Orlando Magic are 5 games back.
The Celtics are 9-1 against the Atlantic Division, 18-3 at home, and 12-6 on the road. Although they’re only 15th in the NBA is points per game, they give up the fewest points in the NBA, at just 91.97 PPG. Clearly, the Celtics are all about defense.

There’s not much argument that the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers are expected to dominate the 2010-2011 NBA basketball season, but as all experienced handicappers know, there is no such thing as a guarantee. One of the teams with the best chances to knock off the elite teams this season is the Boston Celtics. The Boston Celtics almost won the NBA Championship last year, but they blew a 3-2 series lead against the Lakers and lost the series in 7 games.
Last year the Celtics had a 50-32 record, but that was mainly due to finishing the season with a 27-27 record. They started the season off on fire, but injuries quickly started piling up and it caused the Celtics to fall back in the standings. If they can avoid injuries this season they could easily win 60+ games this season. With most of the attention of the Heat and Lakers this off-season you should be able to pick up some value on the Celtics going over their regular season win total.

The only two significant losses from last year’s team are Rasheed Wallace and Tony Allen, but they made up for the losses by making a few big time acquisitions in the off-season. Danny Ainge (Celtics GM) was able to sign Shaquille O’Neal, Jermaine O’Neal and Delonte West this off-season, which should definitely improve the Celtics team. One of the problems that the Celtics needed to address was their big men and they did that by signing the O’Neal’s.

Kevin Garnett is still a great basketball player, but he’s definitely past his prime and he needed some help. By adding in more veterans to the team, a lot of the pressure on Garnett should be taken away, which will allow him to just play ball. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen will return this season and will provide a ton more leadership and experience. Boston has more experience then the majority of NBA teams this season and that could play a huge role come playoff time.
The Miami Heat isn’t going to have any playoff experience as a unit coming into this season and this could prove to be their downfall. Boston knows exactly what it takes to win the NBA Championship and I would lay my money on a team with experience over a team with a bit more talent. The biggest threat this season to the Lakers and Heat will be Rajon Rondo, who last year proved to be a formidable point guard.
If Rondo can continue becoming a better player then it’s going to be really hard beating the Celtics this year. The older stars on the team need to try and allow Rondo to control the pace of the game and feed off of him. Last year at times it seemed as if the big three didn’t want to let Rondo control the game and it definitely proved costly.
The only factor that may come into play this season that’ll hurt the Celtics is injuries, just like last year. Several of the players on the team have played over 1000 career games in the NBA and this much action takes a toll on anyone. If the Celtics can pace themselves throughout the regular season and have a healthy team heading into the playoffs there is no reason why they couldn’t upset the two favorites.
