Patriots vs. Chargers Analysis & Prediction
The Chargers are looking to put an end to their typical slow starts, but this game will be their toughest of the 2011 – 2012 NFL season. The Patriots were 8-0 at home last season, while the Chargers were 3-5 on the road.
As everyone knows, these are two of the best offensive teams in the league. San Diego led the league in total yards last year (6329), and New England led the league in points per game (32.4).
This game will come down to defense, turnovers, and special teams. New England was #1 in the NFL last year at +28 in the turnover category. The Chargers were -6, mostly caused by 16 fumbles. San Diego is also trying to fix their terrible play on special teams.
Chargers vs. Patriots Point Spread
At the BetOnline Sportsbook, the New England Patriots are favored by -7 (Even) on the point spread. For the Chargers, the best odds are at Bodog, at +7 (-115).
San Diego had the 1st ranked defense last season, but they struggled immensely on special teams. Playing at home, I have to like the Patriots to win. I’d rather get them at -6.5, but I’m not sure we’ll it. I’ll wait until we get closer to game-time, but if -7 is the best I can get, I’ll buy half a point.
Patriots vs. Chargers Money Line
I feel strongly about the Patriots winning this straight-up, but not at -300. The Patriots money line opened at -330, and I’ll wait until we get closer to game time to see if this comes down. If the spread and money line both come down a bit, I’ll take both of these bets.
If you’re picking the Chargers to win outright, you can get them at +250 at BetOnline right now. The chart above will update when the money lines change.
Chargers vs. Patriots Total (Over/Under) Betting Odds
This game should be another shoot-out between two high octane offenses, but the over/under is currently at 53.5 (-110) on both sides. This is the highest total so far this year, and it’s hard to go over on this.
The Patriots defense improved over the off-season, and the San Diego defense is stout. A total of 53.5 and point spread of 7 tells us that bettors are expecting a score in the range of 30-23 to 31-24. That sounds about right to me, as I expect both teams to score 23+. If you agree with that, then the question is, what will the other team do?
On this one, I feel like I’m guessing more than making a reasonable prediction. So, I’ll stay away from the over/under on this game. Since most people reading this article are looking for betting advice, (if I was forced to) I’d bet the under hoping that one defense could step it up. In my opinion, a total of 53.5 is too high to bet the over.
Bet on San Diego Chargers vs. New England Patriots
I really like the Patriots to win this game and I’m going to take them on the point spread and the money line – if there’s enough value on the money line. I’ll skip the over/under, but I would bet the under if I was forced to.
