The Indianapolis Colts (6-3) take on the New England Patriots (7-2) at 4:15pm EST this Sunday and it should be one of the premier games of the 2010 NFL season. In the last meeting between these two teams the Colts managed to win the game by 1 point, but there’s no doubt that the Colts are having some trouble this season, which is why the Patriots have been set at –4 home favorites.

In the Colts last game they squeezed out a 23-17 victory at home against the Bengals. If you watched the game then you know that Indianapolis had plenty of chances to put the Bengals out of the game. Indy was +5 in turnovers in the game and should’ve easily scored more than 23 points. There’s no question that all of the injuries the Colts have had to deal with have been causing them a ton of problems.
New England has the best record in the AFC after week 10 and will look to hold onto their lead by defeating the limping Colts at home this weekend. The Patriots won their game last week 39-26 against the Steelers and it was arguably the best victory of the Patriots season. Pittsburgh is a top caliber team and to go into the Steel City and beat them is a tough thing to do, especially after coming off of an upset loss against the Browns.
Even with all the injuries in Indianapolis, Manning is still having a great season. The team ranks 4th in the league with an average of 26.7 PPG, 4th in total yards with an average of 379.3 YPG, and 3rd in passing yards with an average of 288.9 YPG. One area the Colts struggle with is running the ball, a result of their depleted backfield. The Colts have also struggled stopping opposing offenses this season and they’ll need to have the best performance of the season to stop the Patriots.
New England ranks 1st in the league with an average of 28.7 PPG, but they don’t really excel in any of the other offensive categories. When you’re putting up that many points, who really cares? What the Patriots need to work on this week is their play in the secondary, as Manning is going to be airing it out all day long against them. As of right now, the Patriots are ranked in the bottom of the league in almost every defensive stat. The defense has been allowing opposing teams to gain 277.8 passing yards on average and 113 rushing yards.
After looking over the 1st half of the season for both teams I’m picking the Patriots in this matchup. I expect a high scoring game as well, and the over/under is set at 50 – high, but do-able for these teams. Due to the Colts injuries, I expect the Patriots to cover the spread. One thing is for sure – this will be an exciting game to watch.
