Texans vs. Colts Analysis & Prediction
The Houston Texans (6-10 last season) will play host to the Indianapolis Colts (10-6 last season) in week 1 for the 2nd straight year. Last season, the Texans beat the Colts 34-24 in their week 1 home opener, but the Colts won the 2nd meeting in week 8 (30-17). Houston has a stellar offense which looks basically the same for 2011 – 2012. Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson and Arian Foster will look to improve upon last season’s overall numbers.
The big problem for the Texans last year was their awful passing defense. For this season, they’ve added several new players including rookie JJ Watts and new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. The Colts also have defensive problems, and Foster should be able to run all over the Colts defense in week 1. Indianapolis has problems on offense, as QB Peyton Manning is nursing a neck injury and isn’t expected to play. Last year he struggled in week 1 against the Texans and that could also be the case for replacement Kerry Collins this season.
Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans Point Spread
At the time this article is being written, the Houston Texans are favored by -9 (-105) at the BetOnline Sportsbook. Bettors can get +9 (-115) on the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts have signed Kerry Collins to cover for Payton Manning until he’s able to come back. When Manning was still expected to play, the Colts were 3 point underdogs. Without him, they’re 9 point dogs. Obviously the Colts need Manning to get back to action asap, before it’s too late.
Houston worked on improving their defense this off-season by drafting 5 defensive players with their top 5 picks, hiring defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, and switching to a new 3-4 scheme. Mario Williams will now be playing outside linebacker and he should cause havoc from the outside.
The Houston Texans should have an awesome offense in 2011, and I think they’ll do considerably better than their 6-10 record than last year. Foster may regress a bit this season, but I think the WR’s and Schaub will have better seasons. Defenses are going to need to focus on Foster more this year and Andre Johnson, Jacoby Jones, Kevin Walter and Owen Daniels should benefit from more 1-on-1 coverage. I’m betting on the Texans to come out firing again in this week 1 matchup against their division rivals.
I’m betting on the Houston Texans to cover the point spread, although I hate giving up 9 points. Kerry Collins isn’t the answer for beating the Texans, and the Texans offense is likely to hurt the Colts defense. So, I’ll be taking the Texans -9 (-105) at BetOnline.
Texans vs. Colts Money Line
Right now, we can get the Texans at -400 on the money line or the Colts at +330 at the BetOnline Sportsbook. Although I expect the Colts to cover, I don’t see any way for them to outright win this road game.
Since I can’t find a way to pick the Colts, and can’t find value in -400 on the Texans, I wont be betting on the Colts vs. Texans money line.
Colts vs. Texans Total (Over/Under) Betting Odds
The Colts vs. Texans over/under game is currently 43 (-110) at the BetOnline Sportsbook. These teams are known to put up points, but I think the final score will fall real close to the total. Houston should put up enough points on the inept Colts defense, but it’s tough to predict how Collins will perform.
I’m leaning towards the over on this one, but it’s too unpredictable. Because of that, I won’t be betting the over/under on this game. If I had to take a pick, I’d go with the over – hoping Kerry Collins can find the end zone.
