Dallas Mavericks at Orlando Magic Game Preview
The new-look Magic with Gilbert Arenas, Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu are still trying to gel and will have had zero practices together before facing the hottest team in the NBA. Orlando management made the blockbuster trade hoping to keep pace with the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics, but the investment may take time to pay dividends. It will eventually, but I don’t see it happening this quickly. At least the home club still has Dwight Howard when it comes to post play. He leads a top five defense with 12 boards and 2 blocks every game. He is an iron-man as well playing over 34 minutes a contest.
Head Coach Stan Van Gundy barely had time to say the players names before creating a lineup Monday night. He started Jamal Crawford at point guard allowing Arenas to come off the bench. The former Washington Wizard star hit for 10 points in 27 minutes. Tukoglu and Richardson are both outside sharpshooters that once acclimated to their new team will reduce double-teams on Howard, allowing Superman more room to fly.
Dirk Nowitzki, the perennial All-Star power forward dropped in 26 vs. Dwayne Wade, LeBron James & friends, so the question remains can he do it against the Magic. He is having a great season to date with new highs in field goal percentage and three-point percentage.
Dallas is always viewed as an also ran, perhaps due to the antics of owner Mark Cuban, but on the floor, the Mavericks are a tough, no-quit gritty club. Jason Terry, Caron Butler and Shawn Marion combine for over 40 points a game and veteran point guard Jason Kidd still gets it done averaging 8 points, 5 boards and 9 assists every game.
Mavericks vs Magic Odds & Free Prediction
Dallas quietly has won 15 of their last 16 games and defeated the likes of Utah (twice), Miami and Phoenix along the way. Look for the Mavericks to dominate Orlando most of the game until the Magic make it respectable. I’m thinking it’s Dallas by about seven, meaning I’m taking the Mavericks -4. I like these odds.
