The 2011 Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco will be held on Sunday, May 29th at the famed Circuit de Monaco. Drivers are well into their practice sessions, and the fastest lap time on Thursday was put together by Fernando Alonso (Ferrari), posting a 1m 15.123s. He was followed closely by Lewis Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes), recording his fastest lap at 1m 15.228s.
Nico Rosberg got his Mercedes down to 1m 15.321s, followed by Button, Vettel, and Massa, all coming in under 1m 16s.
Below we’re going to talk about some different aspects of this race, and how they should affect your betting. The latest F1 odds are also listed below.
Circuit de Monaco – Race & Track Details
The Grand Prix de Monaco is a 78 lap race on a 3.34 km long circuit. The track winds through the streets of Monaco and La Condamine, along the edge of the harbour. It features a tunnel that runs below the Fairmont Hotel, the famous Loews hairpin turn, and some of the most dangerous driving in Formula One racing. The track is known for it’s tight turns, difficult passing, and pushing drivers to the limits of their ability. Translation = exciting racing!

Betting on the 2011 F1 Monaco Grand Prix
When online bookmakers originally posted their odds for the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel was a bigger favourite than he is now, after some practice sessions. This is a race where power means less, and driver ability means more. This levels the playing field a bit, making Vettel less of a favourite come race day. The odds are beginning to reflect this, and as we get closer to the start of the race, odds on other drivers will likely come down.
This means that those betting on anyone other than Vettel should be making their bets early. Those who are betting on Vettel could see better odds within a couple hours before the race begins.

Based on Thursday practice sessions, it appears that Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have the edge. I’m expecting Hamilton to get out in front early, and Vettel to get caught in traffic. As mentioned above, passing on the Circuit de Monaco is extremely difficult, so those in front early will have a distinct advantage. I think Hamilton is going to be too much for Alonso and Rosberg, and too far in front for Vettel to catch & pass.
Outright Winner: I’m going with Lewis Hamilton to win his second race of the 2011 F1 racing season, and gaining a bit of ground on Vettel’s points lead. Punters can get 4/1 odds on Hamilton at Bodog or Bet365 right now, and I love that bet over 6/5 on Vettel. In fact, I’d be more inclined to go with Alonso at 9/2 at Bodog.com than I would Vettel at 6/5.
Favorite Podium Finish Bet: Nico Rosberg. At 4/1 at Bet365, Rosberg offers a lot of value on a podium finish. He’s putting up strong lap times, and if he starts the race up front, he could stay there. I’m not crazy about his Mercedes, but the track favors drivers who start in front, which so far Rosberg has shown the ability to do. If you take your F1 betting seriously, always look for value. Just because you think Sebastian Vettel is a lock for a podium finish doesn’t mean he’s a good value at 1/3.
It’s likely that the odds on Hamilton, Alonso, and even Rosberg could come down a bit as we get closer to race day. So, if you’re planning on betting on any of these guys, I’d do it now.
