Redskins vs. Giants Analysis & Prediction

The New York Giants (10-6 last season) and Washington Redskins (6-10 last season) will battle it out in Washington during week 1 of the 2011 – 2012 NFL season. These division rivals know each other well, having played against each other twice near the end of last season. The Giants won both of those games by scores of 31-7 (week 13) and 17-14 (week 17), but both teams are going to look different in 2011. During the off-season, the NY Giants loss TE Kevin Boss and they’ve also been having contract problems with Steve Smith and Osi Umenyiora.

The Washington Redskins don’t even know whether Rex Grossman or John Beck will be starting in week 1, and head coach Mike Shanahan has made it clear that nobody will know until closer to game time. The Redskins no longer have Donovan McNabb or Albert Haynesworth on the team, so they should be able to have a fresh start in the locker room. Tim Hightower looks to be the #1 RB in Washington and I think he’s set-up for a big season this year. Struggling in the QB position should translate into a limited passing game, giving Hightower a lot of chances to run.

New York Giants vs. Washington Redskins Point Spread

Right now the Giants are favored by -3.5 points and I think that might be even higher by game time, so if you like the Giants I’d jump on them now. You might think about buying a half-point as well, that way you can push if it’s a 3 point game. These two teams generally play each other tough, especially in Washington, but I like the Giants. Last year the Giants won by 3 points in Washington, which is why I recommend buying a .5 point if possible.

New York definitely has the much better team and I think Eli Manning will improve upon last season. I don’t see Eli throwing nearly as many INT’s as last season. Manningham and Nicks should both have breakout seasons and I think they’ll both play a role in the week 1 game against the Redskins. I’m betting on the Giants at -3.5, but if you have the chance I’d buy the .5 point off of the spread for a bit of a cushion.

The money line on this game is actually looking pretty good if you don’t like betting on the point spread. I like the Giants to pull out a victory although it may be close and therefore the money line might be a wise choice this week.
