Mavericks vs Spurs Game Preview
This rivalry has been intense this season. On November 26, the Mavericks came to San Antonio and beat the Spurs 103-94 behind Nowitzki’s 26 points, despite Manu Ginobili knocking down 31 of his own. On December 30th, the Spurs returned the favor in Dallas winning 99-93, powered by Tim Duncan’s 17 points and Gary Neal’s 21 off the bench. Nowitzki missed the game due to an injury.
The Mavericks show is run by ageless point guard Jason Kidd. He is averaging only 8.0 points a game but adding 8.7 assists as well. Shooting guard Jason Terry is the second leading scorer averaging 15.6 points, while Shawn Marion has been a solid starter after originally being the sixth man. Marion is skilled offensively averaging 11 points in 26 minutes a game and is a superb defender. The Maverick hosted Orlando on Saturday night and lost by ten getting outscored 37-26 in the final 12 minutes. DeShawn Stevenson scored a season-high 24 points in the loss as Dirk Nowitzki sat for the seventh straight game. The seemingly minor knee injury has kept the star forward off the court for over two weeks. Stevenson has done well in his absence as had Shawn Marion.
San Antonio went east last week and suffered back-to-back defeats in New York and Boston surrendering over 105 points in each game. They returned to winning ways in recent days with a three-point win over Indiana, then two in a row against Minnesota, followed up by a road win against the Bucks .
The Spurs leading scorer Manu Ginobili averages 19 points a game but has slowed in recent weeks. Tim Duncan has been solid offensively and even better defensively. His scoring is down to 13.7 PPG from his career average of 20.8 but he adds three assists a contest. His rebounding numbers are down too, grabbing 9.3 boards per game, versus his 11.5 career average. The Spurs like the run and gun style game and subs George Hill, Gary Neal and James Anderson are good shooters. Point guard Tony Parker is scoring 17.4 points a game with seven assists while Richard Jefferson has been outstanding this year with 13.3 points a contest.
Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs Prediction
With Nowitzki n street clothes again, the Mavs will need big games from Marion, point guard Jason Kidd, Caron Butler and Jason Terry. Dallas will have a big hill to climb without Dirk, so watch for San Antonio to wear down the Mavericks and win going away in the fourth quarter.
Like everyone, I like the Spurs in this game. However, I don’t like giving up 10 to the Mavericks. I’m taking the Mavericks +10 at Sportsbook.com. I’m also taking the under, at 192.5. At Sportsbook.com, they offer reduced juice (-105) on Friday NBA games.

San Antonio Spurs vs Dallas Mavericks Game Preview
Dirk Nowitzki, the big gun for Dallas, was taken down during the team’s 103-93 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night. Nowitzki was hurt with in the second quarter while hitting a fall-away jump shot. He was fouled on the play, got up and made the free throw, but did not return. X-rays were negative but the knee was reportedly very tender and the Mav’s forward even hinted that the knee had been a problem prior to Monday night. He didn’t play against the Raptors last night, and it looks like he’s going to sit against the Spurs as well. Nowitzki has said that he wants to play, but there’s no reason to rush him back, and the Mavericks will need him healthy for the rest of the season.
Replacing Nowitzki, Shawn Marion came off the bench and chipped in 20 pts in the ten point victory against the Thunder on Monday. On Tuesday however, Marion only scored 11, with 4 rebounds. No doubt the Mavericks will miss Nowitzki’s production if he sits against the Spurs.
The tough part for the Mavericks is their schedule. Thursday’s game will be the third in four days for Dallas, with two of three at home. The wear & tear on an older team like Dallas can show in the fourth quarter. San Antonio is another one of the elderly clubs in the NBA and will have played three games in five days, including a 15 point blowout of the Lakers on Tuesday.
San Antonio’s Tim Duncan is not putting up MVP numbers, but he’s consistent and solid every game. He is an equally adept passer and rebounder and his overall improvement this year has opened up the court for Gregg Popovich’s club. The Spurs have five shooters on the floor at most times. In addition to Manu Ginobili (19.5 ppg) and George Hill, Gary Neal and James Anderson are willing to let it fly any time. Tony Parker is ripping twine from downtown at a career-high .381 percent. The entire club seems to have taken to his sharpshooting as Matt Bonner (.511 on three point attempts) and Richard Jefferson (.448 from beyond the arc) are giving officials arms a workout. Catch and shoot has become a San Antonio offensive staple.
San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks Free NBA Pick
Dallas will need big games from Marion, Jason Kidd, Caron Butler and Jason Terry. Dallas will have a big hill to climb without their seven footer; so watch for San Antonio to wear down the Mavericks and pull away to win by six late in the contest.
