49ers vs. Seahawks Analysis & Prediction
The Seattle Seahawks (7-9 in 2010) and San Francisco 49ers (6-10 in 2010) will meet in a divisional matchup to start the 2011-2012 season. Both of these teams made significant changes during the off-season, and this game is rather difficult to predict.
Quarterback Alex Smith will be given one more chance to prove he can start for the Niners, but his leash will be short. The 49ers offense should improve this year, with WR Michael Crabtree, TE Vernon Davis, RB Frank Gore and newly signed WR Braylon Edwards on the field. Jim Harbaugh is taking over head coach duties in San Francisco as well, replacing Mike Singletary.
The Seattle Seahawks could be in for a long 2011 – 2012 season. They lost QB Matt Hasselbeck and Tatupu, but signed Tavaris Jackson and Sidney Rice during the off-season. I’m not a fan of Jackson as a starting QB, but I’ll have to watch him in the 1st week to see how he performs with Rice & company.
Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers Point Spread
At the time this article is being written, the BetOnline Sportsbook, has the San Francisco 49ers favored by -5.5 (-110). Alternatively, we can get the Seahawks +6 (-115) at Bodog. If I was betting on the Seahawks, I’d take the 1/2 point at Bodog and pay the extra 5%.
These NFC West division rivals met twice last year, including in the 1st game of the regular season. The Seahawks won the 1st game 31-6 at Qwest, but the 49ers won their home game against Seattle 40-21. The home team typically does well in this division rivalry and I expect the 49ers offense to be effective enough to cover the 5.5 point spread. Tavaris Jackson has a lot to prove, and aside from Sydney Rice, he doesn’t have much star power around him to help out.
San Francisco is looking for a fresh start this season with their new coach, and I’m confident they’ll pick up the home victory and cover the -5.5 point spread. The Niners have a lot of tools on offense this season to help Smith get the ball in the end zone. If he can’t get the job done, Harbaugh is likely to yank him early in the season. There’s pressure on Smith this season, but I think he understands this is going to be his last chance.

49ers vs. Seahawks Money Line
I don’t like betting on the money line when two division rivals square off unless I really like the underdog – which isn’t the case in this game. You can bet on the San Francisco 49ers -250 or the Seattle Seahawks +210 at the BetOnline Sportsbook. However, -250 is too much to risk on a team that finished 6-10 last year in the weak NFC West. Not enough predictability for me to risk that kind of odds.
For this Seahawks vs 49ers matchup, I’ll stay away from the money line, and give up the points on the spread.
Seahawks vs. 49ers Over/Under Betting Odds
In Seattle last season, the Seahawks and 49ers combined for 37 points, just one fewer than the over/under on this game.
Later in the season when they met in San Francisco, they combined for 61 points. I don’t think they’ll score nearly as much this time around, but the over/under is set at just 38 points right now at the BetOnline Sportsbook.
I’m expecting Alex Smith to move the ball around well, and be the difference on the over/under. The wild card will be the Seahawks ability to score, but we don’t need a lot from them. I’m betting on the game to go 40 points or more, and wouldn’t be surprised to see 44+.

My favorite bet on this Seahawks vs. 49ers matchup is the Niners to cover the -5.5 point spread. I also like the over in this game, expecting to see 40+ points on the board. I’m staying away from the money line, and hoping Alex Smith can get his offense going well enough to win by at least two field goals.

I’m expecting a game in the 24-17 to 27-13 range for a 49ers win. With the over/under at 38 right now, I like this bet. I expect the Niners to get points on the board, and if the Seahawks offense can be effective, we’re more likely to see 38+ in this game.
