Connecticut vs San Diego State Sweet 16 Preview
UConn
The Huskies of UConn (28-9) could be called the Kemba Walkers as the junior point guard led the team in scoring at 23.5 points and in assists at 4.5 per game. The 6-1 sharpshooter is likely headed to the NBA next season, so this is his last chance to deliver a title to Connecticut. He was quiet in the team’s easy opening round win over Bucknell, but was a stud scoring 33 of his team’s 69 points in the win over Cincinnati. He is a complete player, averaging almost six rebounds and two steals per game. If he is hitting from the outside (he shoots 34% from three point range), UConn is very tough to beat.
Jeremy Lam adds ten points per game plus big man Alex Oriakhi chips in nine points and nine boards. The key to the Huskies is transition from defense to offense. Coach Jim Calhoun preaches stops on the defensive end, rebounds and quick breaks for easy baskets. UConn was 11th in the nation in rebounds and 63rd in scoring offense. Only ten times all year did opponents score more than 70 points against the Huskies, and three of those games went to overtime.
Connecticut won five games in five days over five ranked opponents to win the Big East tournament Championship. They also own non-conference wins over Texas, Michigan State and Kentucky. The Huskies were 12-9 against tournament teams this year.
SDSU
San Diego State (34-2) did not figure in most anyone’s pre-season Top 10, but the Aztecs won the Mountain West Conference. Finishing strong, they overpowered most of their opponents with speed and quickness on both ends of the floor. Kawhi Leonard leads San Diego State in scoring averaging 15.6 points a night. The 6 ft. 7- inch sophomore forward is a good shooter from the field (44.5%) and works hard on the glass (10.6 rebounds per game). He is only 225 pounds but does well down low and can run the floor on the break. He is complemented by Malcolm Thomas inside who scores 11.4 and chips in 8.1 rebounds per game. The Aztecs have a balanced attack that includes D.J Gay (11.0 points) and Billy White (10.1 points). Gay leads his school in assists per game at 3.2 a night.
The Aztecs went 6-2 against NCAA Tournament teams this season, but their only major non-conference win was against Temple in double –overtime last weekend. Their only losses came to Brigham Young University which were blowouts, but they came back to avenge those defeats with a win in the Mountain West Tournament. They do own wins over Gonzaga and three wins over UNLV.
Everything on paper says UConn should win this game. They have the best single player, played a tougher schedule, are hot shooting and playing well, plus they’re more experienced. But that’s why they play the games and call it March Madness. Take San Diego State +1 at Bodog.com.
